Should your organization hire a person or a smart machine?

70% of the respondents to the 2008 McKinsey Quarterly report on the economy and hiring believe the U.S. economy is worsening and will enter a recession. The hiring forecast in North America based on the polled responses shows a decrease in over-all hiring compared against 2007 numbers with 67% of the companies expecting no change or a decrease in staffing.

What are companies doing to combat the economic downturn?

Raising prices to recover increasing costs is not competitively advantageous. Since the largest expense in a service-based economy is labor, strategically thinking management constantly evaluates labor expenditures looking for ways to scrape the greatest benefit from each dollar. One cost/benefit trade being done across the board in small, medium, and large businesses includes the one-time cost of purchasing automation applications for some jobs versus the forever commitment of hiring. They ask themselves:

• Do we have tasks currently being done by individuals that could be automated?
• When should we choose automation over hiring?
• What might be the unintended consequences of automation?
• How can we determine the ROI (Return on Investment) for an automated service or a production monitoring system?
• What is our competition doing?

Dynamic tasks that require judgment, agility, integration of complex concepts, or balancing competing priorities are poor candidates for automation. On the other hand, tasks that are repetitive, with a limited set of choices or decision branching, are excellent candidates for automation. The technical difficulty of the task is usually not the deciding factor in selecting automation versus hiring. With increasingly sophisticated and intelligent software, many highly complex, but repetitive and quantifiable tasks, can be automated.

Location, Location, Location:
Finding People Who Don't Want To Be Found

In today's information age, it has become easier to find people who don't want to be found. We use many different resources to locate debtors; some of these resources are free, and others require paid subscriptions.

Paid subscriptions include services like the three major national credit reporting agencies: TransUnion®, Experian(SM), and Equifax®. Other well-known and efficient services are Dun & Bradstreet, LexisNexis®, and Accurint®.

Searching for information about a business or its owners? A good place to start is www.corporateinformation.com or www.ceoexpress.com. You can also find links to individual state databases at www.searchsystems.net or by accessing the National Association of Secretaries of State. Some web-based sources allow you to search for phone numbers (www.whitepages.com), addresses, reverse phone number look-ups (www.phoneaddress.com) and email addresses (www.infospace.com). There are even services that allow us to locate information about unlisted phone numbers and cell phone numbers (www.reversephonedetective.com).

Finally, a great tool for anyone needing help searching for law, websites, or locating
individuals and assets, can be found at www.virtualchase.com.

Determing which sites are best for mining information can be a never-ending search!
